BASF and NASi help North American
airport battle winter weather

Morristown Airport keeps runways clear with potassium formate

MARION, OH, and FLORHAM PARK, NJ, March 22, 2016 – BASF and Nachurs Alpine Solutions Industrial (NASi) enabled Morristown Airport to keep its runways clear and safe this winter with Alpine™ RF-14F, a deicing product that has less impact on the environment than those currently available. Developed by NASi, a major manufacturer of chemicals and liquid ice melt solutions, Alpine™ RF-14F uses potassium formate, a derivative of BASF’s formic acid.

Morristown Airport, an award-winning airport recognized for its performance in snow and ice control, conducted a trial of Alpine RF-14F with NASi and BASF. A video of the trial is available by clicking here.

“Potassium formate proved to be a comparable if not better choice than other products we have used, quickly dissolving the ice on our high traffic taxiways while consistently maintaining our braking action through the winter season,” said Peter Gilchrist, Manager, Operations and Security of the Morristown Airport.

Potassium formate is a fast-acting, reliable and efficient liquid deicer that can help airports significantly reduce Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) emissions and waste water treatment costs. Alpine RF-14F is AMS 1435 certified and can be applied with existing standard airport spray equipment.

“The opportunity to partner with BASF in producing new chemistries was a perfect one, which allowed us to leverage their new formic acid production facility and offer a deicer alternative to airports looking to minimize their environmental impact,” said Carla Potts, Business Manager of NASi.

BASF recently opened its new formic acid plant in Geismar, Louisiana and is currently the only company in the U.S. to produce the product. By producing formic acid in North America, BASF can reduce delivery times throughout the region for deicing and other applications.

Formic acid as an effective solution in a wide range of applications such as animal feed preservatives, road and runway deicing, household and industrial cleaning, pharmaceutical and other chemical intermediates, and promotion of oil and gas extraction. BASF is the world’s leading producer of formic acid, with production plants at its integrated Verbund sites in Ludwigshafen, Germany, Nanjing, China and Geismar, Louisiana.

Morristown Municipal Airport, recognized for its award winning performance in snow and ice control, is an active user of Alpine RF-14F liquid deicer

Morristown Municipal Airport, New Jersey

“Potassium formate proved to be a comparable if not better choice than other products we have used, quickly dissolving the ice on our high traffic taxiways while consistently maintaining our braking action through the winter season,” said Peter Gilchrist, Manager, Operations and Security of the Morristown Airport.

Alpine RF-14F was used to pre-treat the runway resulting in good friction and braking action after plowing and brooming.  It performed well as a de-icer on our taxiway by completely breaking up the ice within 30 minutes in traffic areas and about 60 minutes in non-traffic areas.

Nachurs Alpine Solutions Industrial (“NASI”), Alpine RF-14F™ Liquid Deicer, 50% w/w Potassium Formate, is an advanced, environmentally friendly, liquid runway deicer, which meets FAA requirements of the latest edition SAE AMS 1435 specifications.

Alpine RF-14F may be used as an anti-icer or as a deicer. It is ready to use and requires no dilution, mixing, or heating and can be applied with most standard airport spray equipment.

WHY FORMATES AND WHY NOW?

TECHNOLOGY:

Formates have been used in Europe for over a decade to reduce the environmental impact and loading on wastewater treatment facilities

SUPPLY:

  • New domestic supply of formic acid raw material
  • NASi logistical network and capability

PERFORMANCE:

  • Highly effective for anti-icing in preparation for winter events
  • Fast deicing of frozen runways and taxiways
  • Pre-wets and activates solid deicers

ENVIRONMENT:

Potassium Formate has the lowest Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) among commercially available liquid runway deicer products meaning it consumes less oxygen as it breaks down into carbon dioxide and water; thus minimizing impact on water bodies.  It’s a practical and cost effective solution for airports working to minimize their environmental impact.

VALUE:

  • Available and priced competitively with domestically sourced raw materials
  • Reduces airport operational costs when effluent treatment is required
